MoHow Awning Ratchet Strap Tie Down Kit
We believe these are the strongest & best awning tie downs on the market.
Especially made in the UK for MoHow, this our latest version - we've sold over 1000 pairs of this design online and at shows over many years.
Wind-out awnings should always be secured down - even on a calm day, a sudden puff of wind can lift them up and sometimes even over the roof of a van, wrecking the expensive awning and causing extensive damage to the van. Check online and you will find many, many stories of this happening.
Our straps slide into your awning rail front slot, you locate them next to your awning legs. The knuckle joint at the top of your awning leg is the main weak spot - with our strap positioned here, it pulls down on that joint and stops it being strained if the wind does try to lift the awning. Our straps, unlike some other methods, put no strain on the awning arms or fabric. They locate securely in the awning slot with a wide strip fitting, which is attached with heavily reinforced stitching to the strap itself. See the video on this listing for a clear illustration of how they work.
Each strap has an 800kg breaking strain and unlike the cheap straps ours are made from UV resistant polyester, these will not decay in the light for many many years. Unlike some other straps, including those from the awning manufacturers themselves, there are no plastic buckles used - which go brittle and break.. See the video below for how to use them.
Each strap is 2.4m / 8' long and goes down to a high quality ratchet strap mechanism. Very simple to use, these easily enable you to put some tension on the strap and will not slip - there's a very good reason why lorry drivers use a heavier version of these to secure their loads! You don't need to tie them down too tight, just enough so the strap is under a little tension.
Choice of Hi-Viz Yellow, Red, Blue, Black or Green straps. Yellow is always popular - the most visible and easiest to see in low light and not trip over.
If the wind is starting to pick up you should always wind your awning in, no matter how you secure it. Eventually any peg will pull out - better to be safe than sorry.
We offer these as a complete kit with the following optional extras, just select from the menu:
Camping Hammers - These hammers really are beautifully designed, perfect for the job.
The hammer end - pretty obvious! The spade end - for digging out those pegs that have gone in a bit too far
The hook end - for pulling pegs out of course, but importantly the hammer end sits very comfortably between your fingers for you to pull with - the extra length over a conventional peg puller makes it a much easier task for your knees & back.
Weighing 13 oz (368g) the hammer is light to pack but still heavy enough to do the job. Metallic anodised alloy shaft in a variety of colours plus a bright red wrist strap make it hard to lose. Overall length is a fraction over 12" / 30cm
Storage Bags - Good quality strong canvas zipped bags with plenty of room, these are the perfect size to keep all your kit in
Springs - An option, these strong springs go between your straps and pegs and just provide a bit of flexibility. Your van will always rock slightly from side to side, in the wind or just as you get in and out - the springs mean that motion will put less strain on the awning than without them.
Pegs - pretty obvious, but the straps are only as good as the pegs holding them to the ground! These are 30cm / 12" long 10mm rebar pegs, galvanised for durability. With a sharpened tip to make them easier to drive in they are a good compromise between size, weight and effectiveness.
